What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are ceramic restorations designed to mimic the ideal color, texture, and shape of real teeth, and they can be cemented over teeth prepared to receive them to conceal a host of unpleasant defects like chips, cracks, stains, and gaps or even address misshapenness or stubbiness. This treatment can completely transform a patient’s smile in as few as two appointments.

The Process of Getting Veneers

The first step to receiving veneers is to schedule a consultation at our Portland office so we can evaluate your oral health as well as your goals for your smile. Some patients may need to undergo restorative treatments like fillings, root canals, or gum disease therapy before they can receive veneers, and we’ll be happy to perform these treatments at our office.

When the patient is ready, we will schedule them for two appointments. During the first, our dentist will anesthetize the treatment area, remove a small amount of enamel from the teeth receiving veneers to make room, take digital impressions of the patient’s bite, and fix temporary appliances on the treated teeth. About two weeks later, the patient will come back to our Portland office to have their temporary veneers removed and their customized final appliances cemented in place. Then, they will receive any final adjustments and be sent on their way to enjoy their new smile.

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

People go over paperwork

Dental insurance plans do not usually cover elective cosmetic treatments such as veneers, so you will probably have to pay for the entire treatment out-of-pocket. However, insurance may provide partial coverage for preliminary treatments such as gum disease therapy, fillings, and root canals. We also offer flexible financing plans from CareCredit, which can allow you to break your bill into easy monthly installments. We’ll be happy to discuss your insurance and financing options when we see you during your consultation.

Veneer FAQs

Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?

Veneers are like your natural teeth in several ways, including that they can break with enough pressure. For that reason, we strongly recommend exercising caution with crunchy foods, like tortilla chips, hard pretzels, and peanut brittle. You should also steer clear of sticky sweets, like taffy, since they can pull your veneers out of place. Basically, it’s best to continue to eat healthy, well-balanced meals that are filled with softer, more nutrient-dense foods, like cottage cheese, plain yogurt, and scrambled eggs.

Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?

There are some patients who aren’t candidates for veneers – at least not from the start. For instance, if there is an active infection in the gums, then we will need to eliminate it before we can focus on enhancing the size, shape, and shade of your teeth. Similarly, if your teeth are decayed, then we will need to provide the necessary restorative care before we can adhere veneers to the front-facing surface.

Can Dental Insurance Cover Veneers?

Typically, dental insurance providers don’t cover the cost of elective treatments, like veneers. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t make your smile makeover more affordable. At Belmont Family Dentistry, we also welcome payment plans with CareCredit, which is a trusted third-party financier. As a result, you don’t have to pay for your treatment plan in one lump sum. Instead, you can break it up into smaller, more manageable chunks that work for your budget.

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Yes! In fact, one of the many reasons veneers in Portland are so loved is because they are crafted from stain-resistant materials, like dental porcelain. So, you can enjoy your morning cup of coffee without worrying too much about stubborn, yellow stains resurfacing.

Important reminder: Your teeth that aren’t covered with veneers can still discolor. So, if you want to maintain a bright, balanced smile, you need to take certain precautions, like using a straw.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

That’s something we will decide together during your consultation! During this visit, your cosmetic dentist will learn about your aesthetic concerns, examine the condition of your teeth and gums, and ask you a few questions about your smile goals. From there, they can determine how many veneers you need. For example, if you want to fix a small chip on your front tooth, then you may only need one. Conversely, if you want to dramatically transform the appearance of your smile, then we will likely recommend 10-12.

Can Veneers Fix Crooked Teeth?

Yes, veneers can conceal mild crowding. So, if the fact that your teeth slightly overlap has always bothered you, you should get in touch with us to schedule a consultation! From there, we can assess the severity of your misalignment, review your treatment options, and help you decide if veneers can give you the confident, beautiful smile that you deserve.
